Agree with ya Ger,alot of the players in the 90s when I was a young lad headin to the games did not give a bollox about the fans,I often tried to get my programme etc signed and was walked past on many an occasion.Ya dont see that these days, players seem more then happy to come out and sign stuff for kids and chat about the match with the bigger kids ha ha.

The players probably knew you and Ger were related and assumed the 100m restriction order he was under for their safety applied to you aswell

I figured out pretty early on in my time going to football that anybody who is paid to play football is most probably a wanker..I find if you stick to that rule, you will very rarely be wrong.

I remember coming back from an away game in Dundalk in maybe 1989 or 1990.It was a Thursday night fixture,we were not going well and we had so few fans that you could pay a fiver and travel on the team bus.We got hammered 4-1 and I was pretty gutted on the way home. The players were not so gutted. In fact the craic was 90 on the back of the bus..It was at that time that it dawned on me that these people have no affinity to the club..They are just there to earn a wage and you cant really argue with that..That is why the whole clapping the fans, badge kissing etc etc is a load of bollocks really

It should be noted though that like every rule there are a few exceptions and I have encountered a few personable characters playing for us down the years...Hunt,Best,Tilson,John Byrne,Morro,Rutherford,Fenlon,Mullen all spring to mind
EDIT..have to mention Lee King aswell. Still a total gent to this day

Agree with most of that and with most of the named players, I'd throw in Paul Keegan (the former player), Dave Hill, Paul Byrne Tony Grant and Shaun Maher to that list aswell.

Spot on as ever,Mick C was on form that day locked shouting "Grace your a disgrace" and other things when he was in goal in front of the old shed in St Mels.

Lol. I know whelo very well. Must show him this post. In fact I'll print it off for him as he struggles with computers. He was working with me for a year until he found out that you could cut copy and paste. Literally cut his work load in half.

In the 3-2 win over Cork a few weeks before that (which I described earlier) Mick C had his boatrace ripped to shreds on barbed wire celebrating the winning goal. In the space of a couple of weeks I'd gone from not knowing who the fuck he was to thinking he was a Legend !!

He was fucking thrilled that someone recognised him...... Arrogant little
bollocks alright.

Paul Whelan does security at the airport these days, I see him there regularly. I think
he's a youth officer with home farm too. There are a few things I know about that cunt
which unfortunately I can't put down here as I'd only end up in court. A real pity.
Paul Whelan is a Development Officer with the FAI now.

You young 'uns don't know how lucky you are - scores of shitty little bogger towns now mercifully bypassed so no one who doesn't actually live in one of those holes ever has to go there. There was an old showband era rhyme that went:

They say that Naas is a terrible place,
And Moate is just as bad,
Kilcock's a hole
And so's Listowel
But, fuck me, Kinnegad.....

Great thread. Years ago, I was introduced to Rocky O'Brien in Magnums. Well. my admiration for him went down the tubes. He was a right prick and abusive. A complete knacker. Tosser. Wanker. Who are you, my arse!

I think you will find he was quoting a person from the 90's so he didnt really USE it

However I agree it should be used more often
I remember we where in Flower Lodge for Bohs v whatever Cork team they where called then,it was early 80s ,anyway Paddy Joyce was strolling around like he couldnt give a f;;;k,and one of the oulfellas shouted at him''will you move your fat arse Joyce''he looked over towards us and put the 2 fingers up,to this yer man shouted ''Ah yer only a bleedin bota Joyce'' you dont hear that one anymore either.

Could have sworn Mick actually fell (totally sober of course ) into the wall at the foot of the grass slope, and returned, covered in blood, telling the Johns ambulance crowd to fcuk off, i'm ok....
